Thirty minutes to Litchfield. Conn Maxwell, at the armor-glass front of the observation deck, watched the landscape rush out of the horizon and vanish beneath the ship, ten thousand feet down. He thought he knew how an hourglass must feel with the sand slowly draining out. It had been six months to Litchfield when the Mizar lifted out of La Plata Spaceport and he watched Terra dwindle away. It had been two months to Litchfield when he boarded the City of Asgard at the port of the same name on Odin. It had been two hours to Litchfield when the Countess Dorothy rose from the airship dock at Storisende. He had had all that time, and now it was gone, and he was still unprepared for what he must face at home. Thirty minutes to Litchfield. The words echoed in his mind as though he had spoken them aloud, and then, realizing that he never addressed himself as sir, he turned. It was the first mate. He had a clipboard in his hand, and he was wearing a Terran Federation Space Navy uniform of forty years, or about a dozen regulation-changes, ago. Once Conn had taken that sort of thing for granted. Now it was obtruding upon him everywhere.

One of H. Beam Piper`s one man has to change the entire social-economic world stories, somewhat along the lines of the Little Fuzzy series. Admittedly the story is a little dated, however Piper`s strength was in creating realistic worlds with believable characters. The dated references do not really deter from the overall impact of the story.

In this tale one man, from a small town on a backwater planet of a fading human empire, is tasked with the impossible job to save his entire civilization. As the town`s most promising student, Conn was practically pressed into service by the elders to locate a mystical computer, left over from an old war and hidden away. In order to do so he must lie and manipulate everyone he knows, and do it for their own best interest. Because the elders believed that the super computer, Merlin, will solve all their world problems; economic, judicial and defense. And Conn, a trained computerman can't really convince them otherwise.

This story of one man`s attempt to harness the strength of his people in order to save them from their slow, inevitable descent into barbarism. To do so he must trick them into building and rebuilding their world, seeking new agricultural, industrial and economic means. All in the name of finding Merlin, a super computer that doesn't exits...or does it.

The Cosmic Computor is one of the better, if not THE best, in Space Opera. Written before Herbert's Dune (Which in & of itself is an EXCELLENT novel), one sees the seed of what Frank Herbert later wrote in that novel. But in The Cosmic Computer one gets action, adventure, drama, & romance in spades.
And let's not forget that H. Beam Piper managed to include a point in all of this as well, in a very concise & susinct way in addition to his usual colorfull writing.
H Beam Piper was one of my favorite authors from my youth. His stories often remind me of Robert Heinlein's Youth series, but a bit edgier. This story is a adventuresome romp with classic space opera motifs. The only grudging aspect is that it was written in the early 1960s and microchip was not even on the RADAR of science fiction authors. This tends to make the reader chuckle about many aspects of the storyline, if not ruining the overall story.
Great golden era space opera and I love the authors voice. Awesome story highly recommended for old school Sci Fi oficianados.
Another good Si-Fi from Piper. I have yet to find a Piper book that I did not like. But this is one of the best.
I enjoyed this book a lot because of its acknowledgment that people are likely to stagnate while waiting to be saved even when with some effort they might change their situation for their own good. I also enjoyed how someone with an idea can sometimes effect change.
I am a sucker for "space opera" stories. This is, at its core, is space opera. Divorce yourself from reality (or what to think/consider reality) and enjoy the ride, You know, read this book for FUN..
Old time sci-fi story about a computer able to predict 500 years into the future for a multi planet federation. Fun read, as computers just starting to be used when this story was written. Get and read the book, ignore the grammar issues and you may like it too.
